Antivirus has been advertised for a long period of time as a common product, similar to a toothbrush, detergent or car. But, despite being an everyday product antiviruses aren’t free of flaws and issues.
It’s simply not possible for antivirus programs to keep up with the number and diversity of new malware that is constantly being created. It’s an arms race, and not all antivirus software available online or in stores can provide security that is close to 100 percent.
Another issue is that Trojans and viruses can alter the computer’s software to ensure that it is unable to detect them. This is possible when the virus alters the settings of the antivirus program, or when it exploits one of its features or functions to generate false-positive.
Additionally, there are numerous instances where the antivirus software is unable to detect files, even if they are clearly infected with malware. The antivirus software hasn’t yet had a chance to adding the file to its database. To do this, it needs to analyze the file and compare its content with known malicious files that are in the antivirus’s database. This is a long and resource-intensive process. The slower the process is, the less accurate the detection. The antivirus also needs to install interceptors that look at system events deep within the computer’s kernel order to send the data to its engine.
